Computer Freezes Up – 3 Things You Should Do Before It Does Happens

There are many things that happen on a daily basis that we tend to just take for granted such as the sun coming up each and every morning. Did you ever think of what would happen if the sun ever failed to rise? Whoa, that’s a deep one. Well my point is, just as the sun does come up each day, there is a very good chance that one day your going to have an experience when your computer freezes up. I would like to go over a few things that you can do to hopefully prevent this from ever happening or at least be prepared when it does happen.

  1. Backup Your Data: This has got to be one of the most overlooked practices by the average computer user. We always think about doing it and never really take any action to implement a plan that will ensure our data is backed up if something terrible happens to our computer. If you use a computer on a daily basis then you will most certainly experience a time when your computer freezes up. Starting with Windows Vista, Microsoft has built in some pretty good backup tools. If you have an external hard drive, then take a few minutes every couple of days and run a backup to your hard drive, or use the software that comes with most externals to backup your machine. The preferred method would be to get yourself setup with an online backup service such as Mozy. They offer 2GB worth of backup for free, or unlimited at $4.95 per month. Not a bad deal!
  2. Program Maintenance: When you buy a new computer in today’s world, it comes loaded with so much crap software it is unbelievable. It is mostly software that you will never even use. What really ‘tweaks my melon’ is it seems like every new computer has some kind of floating ‘access’ bar that loads when you boot your computer. Most people find these annoying and they do nothing other than slow your machine down. Take a few minutes when and look through your installed programs and uninstall anything you don’t find familiar and that you do not use. Also, don’t install all kinds of programs that you will never use. Every time you install a program it is going to clutter your computer registry which could eventually lead to computer lockups and lead to your computer freezes up. Get a reputable Registry Cleaner and use it. You may be surprised at how well your computer runs and how it keeps its performance over the long term.
  3. Hardware Drivers: This is one of the more popular culprits when your computer freezes up. An invalid or corrupt driver will cause your computer to lockup without thinking twice. Although I think that Microsoft has gotten better at preventing this from happening, it doesn’t help that they come out with a new OS every couple of years. This causes hardware manufacturers to have to continually write new driver software to meet not on the new operating systems but also keep the current drivers up to date with all of the Microsoft Operating Systems updates. You get my drift, hardware drivers can cause major headaches if you don’t stay on top of them as the will lead to your computer freezing up. You may want to check back to your computer manufacturer’s website every few months and just check to see if there are any high priority driver updates. Sites like HP and Dell make is pretty easy to navigate and find your exact machine.

So you can almost write it in stone. When your computer freezes up, you want to be not only prepared, but also take some preventative steps that will hopefully never let it happen. Backup your data, uninstall all of the programs you don’t use, and keep your drivers up to date. These are all things every computer user should do.

Why Your Computer Freezes at Startup – Solutions Here

It’s happened to us all before. It may be the start of your day and you turn your computer on. Without thinking twice, you go and grab yourself a cup of brew or do some other task that will give your computer time to boot up. When you come back to your machine you find that it is either frozen or has just simply shut down. You then proceed to ask yourself – Why did my Computer Freeze at Startup?

When your computer freezes at startup or fails to load windows, it is typically either a hardware issue, a corrupt driver, or a bad operating system file. The most important thing to to when trying to fix this issue is to find the source or cause of the problem. It’s normally a process of elimination.

Here are some very important steps to take if your computer is freezing during startup:

  • The first thing you should try is to boot up using what is called “Last Known Good Configuration“. In order to do this, you need to turn your computer on and start to hit the F8 key right away. Hit it continuously until you see the Advanced Boot Menu. You will see a list of different boot up options. Select ‘Last Known Good Configuration”. I would say that this works around 80 – 85 percent of the time. If you computer boots up, then you need to either uninstall the new piece of hardware you installed or the driver that is causing the issue. You may also want to scan your machine for Spyware or Malware.
  • If ‘Last Know Good Configuration” doesn’t work, then you should repeat the same process as shown above to access the Advanced Boot Menu. This time, you will select Safe Mode. After a large list of files scrolls down your screen, your desktop should load up. If it does, then we are driving home the fact that the issue is most likely due to an invalid driver or a corrupt registry key.
  • If your machine still does not boot in safe-mode, then you are looking at either a hardware or operating system issue. If you have recently added a piece of hardware to your computer then you may want to remove it and see if it boots. Another really good step to take is to unplug or disconnect any hardware that is not needed at boot. So what you could do is pop open the tower and disconnect things such as your CD-ROM, Floppy Drive, Modem, Network Card, and etc… You may also want to re-seat the RAM, CPU, and Video Card.
  • If none of the above options work, then you should try a Windows Repair. Only do this if you have the Operating System CD that came with your computer. You want to make sure that you are not restoring the machine back to when you first bought it, but that you are simply repair the version of Windows you have installed. If you boot from the OS cd, you will see the options there to repair your windows installation. This method sometimes takes a little while, but it is usually effective and does its job without you losing any data and actually fixing the problems.

In the previous post, we learned what typically causes a computer freezes. In this post we covered some things you can do if your computer freezes at startup. I would highly recommend a great piece of software that will keep your drivers up to date and will also identify drivers that are outdated or corrupt. Click Here to check out Driver Checker.

What Causes Computer Freezes?

First, a Big Hello goes out to all! Thanks for checking out this website and our quest to stop computer computer freezes forever!

Let’s take a moment here today and look at some reason why a computer freezes up and what causes it to run like crap. Everyone who uses a computer has had their machine freeze up on them at some point. It always seems to happen right when your in the middle of working on something really important.

If we were to write one single post that listed all of the reason why a computer freezes, then it would be one long post. There are countless reason as to why it happens. We at ComputerFreezes.net hope to provide answers to your questions and give great tips and advice to keep your computer running in tip-top shape.

When it comes down to it, there are two main categories that you can put computer freezes into: Hardware and Software. You have the machine itself made up of things such as your Motherboard, Cpu, Ram, Video and so on. Then on the software side, you have your operating system along with all of the other software you have installed. Having a glitch or an issue with anything in either one of these two main categories can cause your computer to freeze up randomly.

Let’s take a look into the hardware side of things. We won’t be really digging too deep in this first post, but lets get you up to speed on some basics. When your talking hardware, your RAM, CPU and Video card are ultra important. If your machine doesn’t have sufficient memory for the tasks you are doing on your computer, this will cause an instant computer freeze. Typically, the system won’t reboot, but it will just become non-responsive and you have have to do a hard shutdown. As far as the CPU and Video card go, it is all about heat with these 2 units. The video card of today’s age are pretty heavy duty, and a lot of them have their own dedicated fan. If either one of these components exceeds their max temperature, you will encounter a computer lock up.

Now let’s take closer look at the software side of things. We really could go on for days on how software can really screw a machine up and cause to to freeze randomly. In future blogs, we will dive deeper into this and try to provide solutions to either prevent or stop this from happening.

Seeing that Microsoft has 90% of the market share when it comes to computer operating systems, you can really expect no less than to have your computer freeze up from time to time. Don’t get me wrong, XP was and is a pretty solid OS and we will see how Windows 7 plays out.

Another really problematic piece of software are hardware drivers. This is software that tells your specifc hardware how to talk to and communicate with the OS. If you OS downloads a specific update or changes in a small way, this can cause a hardware driver to stop working and can produce all kinds of problems with your computer.

We definately don’t want to leave out spyware, malware and viruses. These pieces of software are becoming so complex and look so real to the average user that these are usually the main culprits when it comes to computer freezes. Having been in the IT Consulting realm for over 10 years, I should now. It seems like there isn’t a day that goes by that I am not trying to clean up a machine that has a malicious piece of software on it.

Ok, so we have covered a few of the basics on what causes computer freezes. We will be striving to provide answers to your questions and help with your computer problems. We want to stop these pesky computer annoyances.
