So you may be wondering why is it so important to make sure your PC isn’t running too hot or overheating.

Computers love being cold and hate being hot. It sounds cliché, but it’s true. Computer hardware is much more likely to fail if it is running at a temperature higher than what it was meant to run at.

Here is a list of ‘typical’ components that could be overheating on your PC:

CPU

GPU(graphics card)

Power supply

PC case

Computers love to collect dust!

Symptoms for Overheating

PC will freeze or reboot while watching a movie or playing a game

Experience sudden lockups or reboots

Computer will run for a certain period of time before overheating. If you let it cool down, it will function again until getting too hot.

This guide will provide you with step-by-step instructions for diagnosing and fixing your computers overheating problems.

Step 1 – Inspect Case Vents and Fans

Turn your computer off

Take the side of the case off

Turn computer back on

Ensure that the case, power supply, CPU and GPU fans are running at a high rate of speed

Inspect all vents in the case to make sure they are not clogged with dust

TIP: Try to make sure your computer sits at least 6” off of the floor, especially if it is sitting on carpet. This will help minimize dust intake.

Step 2 – Break Out The Sweeper

Turn computer off

Unplug power cable from power supply

Use the sweeper to clean all the dust from the bottom of the case as well as remove the dust from the fans as well. You could also use canned air for this.

At this point, you could put the side of the case back on and run your computer to see if the overheating problems are fixed.

Step 3 – Take The Side Of The Case Off

Not every computer tech is going to agree on this step, but it does work.

Let’s say your computer is suddenly shutting down while watching a movie or streaming a video online.

Shut your computer down and take the side of the case off.

Run your computer as normal and see if the additional exposure to air helps!

Step 4 – Check The Temps

There are some good 3rd party utilities out there to monitor your fan speeds and temperatures.

It may be a good idea to download and install one of these if you are comfortable doing so.

It is recommended that you check your manufacturers recommended running temps for things like the CPU or graphics card.

Here are two utilities I would recommend:

Speedfan

Core Temp

Step 5 – Clean The CPU Heatsink (Advanced)

The heatsink on the CPU is an absolute magnet for dust.

Turn PC off

Remove CPU fan & heatsink

More than likely, it is clogged up with lots of dust. Used canned air or a sweeper to clear all of the vents.

Step 6 – Thermal Paste & Heatsink Replacement (Advanced)

This step should only be performed by those who are comfortable working on computer hardware.

Thermal Paste – This is a paste that is spread on the CPU heat sink where it sits on the processor. It helps to distribute and pass heat from the CPU to the heat sink. There are all types you can buy and they can actually get a bit expensive. Check out a site like NewEgg to find and buy.

Heat Sink Replacement – In rare cases, mostly on home built machines there may be a need to buy a higher grade heat sink. Again, use a site like NewEgg to find a good deal on one. They are also very good at listing the CPU models they are compatible with. You typically get a heatsink and fan combo.

If you still need further help troubleshooting your computer problem, feel free to ask it in the comments section below.
